Holy Trinity Primary School

Lighting the Way Together

To deliver an engaging and comprehensive science curriculum across our school, we use KAPOW primary science scheme. This ensures a consistent and progressive learning journey for all our pupils.

EYFS Science

At Holy Trinity Primary School, our Early Years children embark on an exciting journey of scientific discovery, fostering a natural curiosity about the world around them. We believe in hands-on experiential learning and our “Trinity Woods” provides an invaluable outdoor classroom where children begin to make sense of the world through regular exploration, observation and investigation.

Through this we integrate the “understanding the world” Early Learning Goal and we provide opportunities to develop these skills within indoor provision. This could be through observational drawings in mark making areas to investigating changes of state in a tuff tray. The use of scientific equipment is encouraged, and all pupils have opportunities to use it.

KS1 Science

At Holy Trinity, science in Key Stage 1 is an exciting journey of discovery that sparks curiosity and encourages the younger learners to explore the world around them. Our pupils begin to access the science national curriculum and build on their learning from the Early Years. Through engaging hands-on activities, the children develop a foundational understanding of the natural and physical world.

We emphasise “working scientifically” by fostering essential skills such as observing closely, asking questions, predicting outcomes, conducting simple tests and communicating their findings. Whether they are investigating the properties of materials, observing plant growth, or exploring the effects of forces, our Key Stage 1 scientists are actively encouraged to think critically, solve problems and develop a lifelong love for scientific inquiry.

KS2 Science

Science in Key Stage 2 builds upon the foundational curiosity developed in EYFS and KS1. Through the national curriculum units, pupils further their scientific knowledge and enquiry by completing an array of engaging and practical investigations. They develop a more sophisticated understanding of scientific concepts across biology, chemistry and physics. Whether they are exploring states of matter, investigating forces and electricity, classifying livings things or understanding the human body, our Key Stage 2 scientists are challenged to think critically and develop investigative skills.

Through ‘working scientifically’ we encourage pupils to formulate their own questions, design and conduct fair tests, collect and analyse data with increasing accuracy, draw conclusions and communicate their findings effectively using scientific vocabulary. We aim for our pupils to understand the uses and implications of science from learning about pioneering scientists to understanding real life implications of science in today’s world and careers that can come from this.
