At Holy Trinity, it is our aim that the Languages curriculum will open doors for our children to see beyond their immediate surroundings into the diverse multilingual world in which we live.
Through the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, they will begin or continue their journey as language learners and develop valuable insights into the many varied and different cultures around the world.
Children really enjoy learning a new language at primary school. Most language-learning techniques are great fun, and children get a real sense of achievement from mastering and using new key phrases.
Whole-School Events
In September 2025, the whole school celebrated European Languages Day. Students from Crossley Heath School and our own parents delivered language workshops to enthuse and excite children to begin their language learning. Year 2 to Year 6 learnt how to say hello and count to ten in French, German, Sinhala and Tamil.

At Holy Trinity the language we learn is French; it is much more about language learning skills than the particular language on offer.
Languages in Key Stage Two
Children have lessons in French throughout Key Stage 2, using the resources and lesson plans from the KAPOW scheme. Through these lessons, the children’s communication and listening skills develop from basic skills to learning French vocabulary and communicating with others. As the children move from Lower Key Stage 2 to Upper Key Stage 2, the language will be embedded and further developed alongside reading and writing skills. These will gradually progress onto more complex language concepts and greater learner autonomy.
It is intended that when children leave our school, they will have a natural curiosity and confidence to explore other countries, cultures and languages, accepting that, in a multi-lingual society it is a valuable skill to be able to communicate effectively with others in another language. They will be engaged and prepared to continue language learning at secondary school.
